Patricia's Journey

From Receiving Support to Serving Communities

Raised at El Refugio Children's Home in Honduras, Patricia overcame the challenges of growing up without parents to build a successful career dedicated to helping others. Born to a single mother from Nicaragua with limited financial resources, she and her siblings were welcomed into El Refugio, where they received not only food, clothing, education, and healthcare, but also the encouragement and stability needed to pursue their dreams.

Through the support of the home, she earned a scholarship to study Social Work at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), graduating in 2020. Her years at El Refugio instilled values of perseverance, resilience, empathy, and service, while giving her the confidence to believe she could overcome adversity and create a different future.

Throughout her university studies, Patricia volunteered at El Refugio and later worked with leading national and international organizations, including Save the Children, UNHCR, IOM, Casa Alianza, and CASM, supporting vulnerable communities, migrants, and children whose rights had been violated. She also gained expertise in project management, community development, leadership, case management, and humanitarian response.

One of Patricia’s greatest personal challenges was losing her mother at the age of four and growing up without a traditional family structure. Rather than allowing those circumstances to define her, she embraced gratitude, faith, and empathy, recognizing that her past did not determine her future. She credits the mentors at El Refugio for believing in her potential and inspiring her to become a role model for other children facing similar hardships.

Today, Patricia continues to give back by volunteering in community development initiatives and strengthening local neighborhood organizations in Choloma, Honduras. She also provides training and advisory support to community leaders, helping build stronger and more resilient communities.

Looking ahead, she hopes to earn a master's degree in Public Policy through a scholarship from the Chilean Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AGCID) before returning to Honduras to serve in the public sector. She also dreams of opening her own hairstyling and braiding business.

Patricia’s story reflects the life-changing impact of investing in children. Through education, mentorship, and opportunity, a child who once depended on the support of others has become a professional dedicated to creating opportunities for future generations.
