The program targets vulnerable families already experiencing malnutrition or undernutrition and facing an immediate risk of further health deterioration. Its primary goal is to stabilize these households and provide the support needed to help them break free from poverty over time.

In the event of natural disasters, Food For The Poor responds by opening its food distribution centers to serve affected populations. This swift action has been critical during past disasters, ensuring that communities receive immediate relief and essential resources during their time of need.

The Hunger Relief Dietary Goals:

  • Addressing caloric deficiency ensures individuals receive enough energy to carry out daily activities and maintain basic bodily functions. Meals are designed to be energy-dense, while incorporating staples such as rice, maize, or wheat, along with healthy fats like vegetable oil to boost calorie intake.
  • Boosting protein intake is another critical aspect of our program that helps combat muscle atrophy and support growth, especially for children and pregnant or lactating women. Food For The Poor relies on affordable protein sources, such as lentils or beans and whenever possible supplement it with eggs and dairy products.
  • To address micronutrient deficiencies, the program also focuses on delivering essential vitamins and minerals such as Iron, which is vital for combating anemia.
  • Priority is given to vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly. Our programs use ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs), such as Biofortik or MannaPacks.
  • The programs also work with communities to educate about the importance of dietary diversity and on the development of locally sourced and culturally appropriate foods.

World Food Program

In collaboration with World Food Program USA and the U.N. World Food Programme, Food For The Poor is addressing chronic malnutrition by supporting school meal programs in El Salvador. Through this partnership, we are providing Biofortik, a highly effective iron-fortified supplement, to 60,000 children in the Sonsonate region. Additionally, we are working to replace imported foods in school meals with locally grown produce, fostering both better nutrition and stronger local economies.

World Food Program USA, a strategic partner of Food For The Poor, spearheads fundraising, advocacy, and engagement efforts across the United States in support of the U.N. World Food Programme’s mission to combat hunger. Together, we provide essential food assistance and implement sustainable solutions to address global food insecurity.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has been on the frontlines of the world’s worst hunger crises, fighting hunger and famine since 1962. This year, WFP is aiming to provide lifesaving meals to 140 million of the world’s most vulnerable people in more than 120 countries and territories.

World Vision

In a meaningful collaboration, Food For The Poor and World Vision have united to support the most vulnerable families in rural El Salvador. This impactful initiative aims to strengthen food security and nutrition for 396 families by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and providing educational workshops. Together, they are empowering communities with the tools and knowledge needed to build a healthier, more self-sufficient future.

The Republic of China (Taiwan)

Food For The Poor’s partnership with the Taiwanese government goes back to 2007.The rice donation is part of Taiwan’s efforts to promote international cooperation and strengthen ties with nations in Latin America, especially in the areas of humanitarian aid and development.

In 2024 the Republic of China donated 9,240 metric tons of rice to Food For The Poor's hunger relief programs and 8,000 metric tons in 2023.

Cáritas Arquidiocesana

Cáritas Arquidiocesana is a charitable organization operating under the auspices of the Catholic Church, dedicated to serving vulnerable populations through various social and humanitarian programs. As part of the global Cáritas network, it works to address pressing issues such as poverty, hunger, social inequality, and disaster relief within its local community and beyond.The organization focuses on providing direct aid, promoting social justice, and fostering sustainable development. Its programs often include food distribution, education initiatives, healthcare services, and capacity-building projects to empower individuals and families to improve their living conditions.

The CEPUDO Foundation

   

The CEPUDO Foundation oversees all of Food For The Poor's projects in Honduras, and much of the distribution of goods sent by Food For The Poor to that country. CEPUDO operates a number of education and community centers that provide the impoverished communities of Honduras with workshops and training classes.

Republic of China (Taiwan) Donates Rice to Food For The Poor to Support Families in Guatemala

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 14, 2024) – The Republic of China (Taiwan) marked the significant donation of 1,000 metric tons of rice to Food For The Poor on Wednesday that will help alleviate hunger among families in Guatemala.

The donation was recognized during a ceremony in Guatemala City, led by Taiwan’s Ambassador to Guatemala, Vivia Chang, and attended by officials from Food For The Poor and its partners, Cáritas Arquidiocesana and the Order of Malta.

Food For The Poor's Family Food Kits Volunteer Program is an initiative that brings together volunteers to assemble and distribute food kits for families in need. These kits are carefully designed to provide essential food items that can sustain vulnerable households facing food insecurity, malnutrition, or the aftermath of natural disasters.

How the Program Operates

  1. Food Sourcing: The food items included in the kits are sourced through donations, partnerships with suppliers, or Food For The Poor’s own resources. These items are selected to provide balanced nutrition and long shelf life, ensuring they are suitable for immediate distribution.
  2. Packing Events: Volunteers gather at designated packing sites, such as community centers, churches, or corporate offices. These events are often organized as team-building activities, community service projects, or special drives to respond to a specific need, such as natural disasters.
  3. Distribution: Once assembled, the kits are transported to areas of need. This could include communities affected by poverty, malnutrition, or emergencies like hurricanes or earthquakes. Local partners and community leaders often assist with the distribution to ensure the kits reach the most vulnerable families.
